Fear or love – which are you choosing?

Warren Buffet is a famous and successful investor. One of his famous quotes is to ‘buy into fear’.

The quote means to not allow fear to take a compulsive grip, in fact quite the opposite. When people are panic-selling on the share market Buffett begins to buy. This strategy of buying when everyone is selling is one of the reasons he is so successful, ie he is ‘buying into the fear’.

Those that are working with AltusQ and familiar with AltusQ language will be familiar with the fear / love paradigm. Every decision in your Business, be it commercial or cultural, will come from fear or love.

From ‘playing not to lose’, or ‘playing to win’.

From a fear of mistakes, or wanting to achieve a goal.

From a fear of uncertainty/ wanting predictability, or trusting yourself / embracing the chaos.

From a place of pessimism, or staying factual.

From focusing on issues, or creating solutions.

From compulsively avoiding risk, or making sensible risk/reward trade-offs.

From fear……. or from love.

It’s such a simple but powerful frame to look through when making decisions, and never more relevant than right now.

My wife and I are taking the current crazy moment as a parenting opportunity to our teenage children. We are making a conscious effort to ensure they are seeing us choose love. To stay factual, stay objective, stay aware of the real risks, but to also be intentional with our behaviours.  I even went to the extent of sharing with our kids a share market trade I made today so they can see which side of the fear/love continuum I am choosing. Whether the investment pays dividends or not, it was an important message I wanted to send to myself and my family. Stay healthy everyone – in body and in mind.
