Christmas is coming quickly and it’s a natural time of year to reflect, particularly given the craziness of what we have seen this year. Below is a snapshot of some of this year’s blogs to provide a summary of the key messages…
Fear or love. Which are you choosing?
Every decision in your Business, be it commercial or cultural, will come from fear or love.
From ‘playing not to lose’, or ‘playing to win’.
From a fear of uncertainty/ wanting predictability, or trusting yourself / embracing the chaos.
From a place of pessimism, or staying factual.
From fear……. or from love. What are you choosing?

Pearls of wisdom from some grey hair
In the middle of COVID-mania I was speaking to the original founder of a 40+ year business recently. It would be fair to say this Business has seen a lot, having survived and thrived quite a number of economic cycles and external shocks.
His belief is the attribute that sets the better performing businesses apart is a calmer and more measured approach to decision making……both in the high and low points of economic cycles. They spend less on the way up and cut less on the way down. A really interesting reflection was that his biggest growth spurts over 40 years always followed economic downturns, when his measured expense management positioned him well against his more frantic competitors.

How do you know if you are winning?
What does winning really mean? Can a ‘win’ be bad for you? Can a loss be good for you? Research shows the brain benefits from fasting in terms of cognitive function, learning, memory, and alertness. Similarly, extended over-indulgence has the opposite effect.
Is it the same with Businesses? Can good times and growth be a risk? Can a famine provide benefits?

Creating your own economy
Economically, we tasted our first recession since the 90s but as always with any economic downturn there are winners and losers. So why is it that there are winners and losers during downturns? Why are some Businesses able to ‘create their own economy’? Can it all be put down to the Industry you are in or is there a little more to it?
