Play to Win
I’ve always been fascinated by sport — the ultimate reality show. Two athletes or teams giving everything they have, tactically, strategically, and emotionally, to win. I love learning from the sporting world because it keeps things real. There’s no room for BS when results are on a scoreboard for all to see every week. I’m equally fascinated by coaches. I watch more than twenty press conferences every week. I see them as an opportunity to be mentored by the elite. Easy access to this content is a gift, offering insight into the minds of the world’s best. When you watch enough of them, you start to learn how to decode the conversations and get to the real messages, hearing what they say, how they say it, what they don’t say, and which parts of the message are intended for which audiences. This obsession led to 100’s of pages of anecdotes and quotes, which then led to the book ‘Play to Win, Play Not to Lose’.
Sport is not a perfect teacher for business and life, but there are close parallels worth paying attention to. This book draws on leadership lessons from sport and my world, business, to explore the difference between ‘playing to win’ and ‘playing not to lose’ in three areas:
- Self-leadership
- Team leadership
- Strategic leadership
I’m forever grateful to the athletes, coaches, clients and business leaders who shared their wisdom — both directly and from afar. Their stories and lessons have shaped this book and the coach I have become.

‘Play to Win, Play Not to Lose’ was shaped by countless press conferences and interviews with the world’s best coaches and athletes. This page gives you direct access to some of that original source material. Enjoy!
